Understanding Others

Field task · Unit 5 of 5 · 10 min

Ask, and do not reply

Have one conversation where your only job is to understand. Ask someone about a view of theirs you find hard to follow, and do not offer your own position at all. Not once.

Out in the world

  1. 1Choose someone you trust enough that this will not feel like an ambush.
  2. 2Open with something like: "I've realised I don't really understand why you see it that way, and I'd like to."
  3. 3Ask questions. When you feel the urge to correct, ask another question instead.
  4. 4Before you finish, say back what you understood and ask if you got it right.
  5. 5Do not give your view, even if invited. Save it for another day.
