Read the other side properly, once
Find one well-argued piece by a thoughtful person who disagrees with you on something that matters. Not the worst example you can find — the best one. Read it the way you would read something you agreed with.
Out in the world
- 1Choose the topic before you choose the article, so you cannot pick an easy target.
- 2Find the strongest version available. If it is easy to dismiss, you have not found it yet.
- 3Read it once through without composing rebuttals.
- 4Write down the single best point it makes, in its own terms.
- 5Only then decide whether it changes anything for you.
