Read the other side properly, once

Find one well-argued piece by a thoughtful person who disagrees with you on something that matters. Not the worst example you can find — the best one. Read it the way you would read something you agreed with.

Out in the world

  1. 1Choose the topic before you choose the article, so you cannot pick an easy target.
  2. 2Find the strongest version available. If it is easy to dismiss, you have not found it yet.
  3. 3Read it once through without composing rebuttals.
  4. 4Write down the single best point it makes, in its own terms.
  5. 5Only then decide whether it changes anything for you.
